The World Primate Sanctuary, previously known as
The Marmoset Care Centre is a haven for abandoned primates.
The Sanctuary was opened 10 years ago, by Wendy Macleod (with 17 years of experience dealing with primates) after she conducting extensive research and behavioural studies of primates in their natural environment. Realising the terrible living conditions of these discarded pets, The World Primate Sanctuary was formed as a non-profitable organisation looking after the welfare of primates. At the sanctuary, we pose to introduce the hand reared primates back into a more natural environment with surrogate parents for their own stability and physical and mental wellness. We have had many success stories over the years. Our aim is not just to care for the primates that are donated to the sanctuary, but also to educate each and every person that has contact with these monkeys, like the pet shops, veterinarians, owners as well as potential owners. The sanctuary offers a 24hour medical help line and holds many school talks and other educational programs. We work closely with other primate protection and care groups and believe that we can make a difference. The World Primate Sanctuary manages to care for more than 100 primates by relying on sponsorships from individual members, various organisations, pharmaceutical companies etc. |
